“Farmhouse” is a broad category here that spans handyman fixers in the $100’s to lovingly renovated showcases that could grace the cover of Country Living over $1 million. A lot of farmhouses in the mid range have been ‘remuddled’ over the years with paneling, vinyl siding, and carpeting that only Austin Powers could love. But at the upper end you find those close-to-perfect showcase houses with classic lines that have been lovingly restored with period woodwork, plank flooring and wrap porches, and updated with new kitchens and baths. A great setting is a given. Right now there are a handful of stunning farmhouses on the market at $800,000+ for buyers who are looking for the whole “Norman Rockwell” package with few compromises. Pricey? Yes. But compared to what something similar might cost in the Hudson Valley or the Berkshires, they’re pretty good values.
