I’ve been planning for a while now to get the property search system on Catskill4sale more in sync with the main site. Over the winter I did an overhaul of the main site to make it more responsive for folks using tablets and phones, but the property search side was still more desktop than mobile friendly. Today was forecast to be a rainy day, and my appointments cancelled, so this morning I brewed some strong coffee, rolled up my sleeves and settled in for a day of programming. I got about 85% of the way there, with a few tweaks still left to do. And I think I did it without any crashes or downtime, with the system staying live through the process.
If you were using the system today, it may have been a little jarring … you likely saw the look and feel change from one page to the next, as I was trying out different stuff. Thanks for your patience.
The purpose of all this is to make the system more ‘touch friendly’, for users on tablets and phones. So there are new menus and bigger touch links. You’ll also notice some new fronts and larger spacing for easier readability on smaller screens. I’m not totally satisfied yet; there are still some things that are kind of ugly that I need to pretty up, but it’s getting there, and I still need to do some work on the phone end.
One BIG change is on the search selection screens, particularly the location selection for “City, County or Zip”. The update doesn’t have pull downs with menu selections, but you input a few characters for what you’re looking for, and selections will pop up. It’s more space efficient, and the ‘state of the art’ for mobile searching, but I’m not convinced it’s better.
So I’d really appreciate any feedback from users, particularly about speed or usability (and the switch out of auto-complete fields rather than pull downs or pick lists.) Also, does it feel slower or faster for you? That’s really hard for me to judge because of browser caching — the system may seem much faster to me than it is to someone else.
