At a meeting last week in Forestburgh, representatives of Mirant Corporation (the owner of the Swinging Bridge reservoir and dam) indicated they plan to begin refilling the reservoir in November and expect to have it back to ‘historic’ levels by next April. (See the Times Herald Record article about the meeting.) That’s great news. Mirant, however, will be refilling the reservoir in one foot increments, and testing the dam structure every ten feet (to return to the previous level, they need to raise the water level a total of 45 feet.) The very important change in this latest announcement is Mirant’s use of the term ‘historic levels’. Previously they’ve hedged on commitment as to the ultimate final level of the lake. Of course, if they encounter problems as they refill, all bets could be off — but this is definitely a move in the right direction.
