Callicoon, New York is situated on the Delaware
River in the western region of Sullivan County, about 2:30 from
New York City. This quaint river hamlet is a little less "yuppie
fru-fru" than Livingston Manor or Jeffersonville, and serves
as a focus for river sports as well as a mini retail hub for
upper Delaware River valley. (Note: Callicoon is not
the same as 'Callicoon Center', a different place about 10 miles
NE.)
Callicoon is home to the Callicoon Theater, a
40's era, single screen movie theater and local landmark. In
addition to showing "slightly out of first run" films,
the theater also hosts the Cine-Art series, sponsored by the
Delaware Arts Society, bringing more sophisticated foreign and
art films to the county.
Just north of the hamlet, along River Road, is
one of the few areas on the New York side of the Delaware River
where river houses don't have busy Route 97 running between
the houses and the river. (Yes, River Road does run between
the houses and the river, but its a very quiet, dead end road,
popular with walkers and bicyclists.)
Callicoon is the center of a rural farming area,
and northeast of the hamlet is the Beechwoods, between Callicoon
and Jeffersonville, one of the loveliest areas of rolling farmland
in the county. There is some spectacular view property in this
area, but seldom many houses for sale. The Villa Roma Resort,
with an 18 hole golf course, anchors the east side of the Beechwoods.
Matthews on Main is a lovely restaurant in Callicoon,
with outdoor seating during the warmer months, while the Western
Hotel offers a dining room with more traditional fare.
Callicoon has a notable festivals and events.
Summer kicks off with the Callicoon Tractor Parade, followed
by the Callicoon Canoe Regatta. Labor Day weekend brings the
Day To Be Gay in the Catskills
festival to town. And every Sunday, there's a lively farmer's
market in the Callicoon Creek Park.
