Barryville is located in the southwest of the county, along the Delaware River on the border of Pennsylvania. Unlike other areas of Sullivan County, where access is primarily via Route 17, Barryville has a number of access options from the city. In addition to Route 17 to Monticello (and then traveling southwest), you can also take I-84 west to Port Jervis and then NY 97 north along the Delaware River, or come up through New Jersey and Milford, PA directly into Barryville.

Thew Barryville / Eldred / Glen Spey area of Sullivan closest to the NJ transit Port Jervis line (operated in cooperation with Metro North), with stations in northwest Orange County at Otisville and Port Jervis. However, the Port Jervis line doesn't run frequently and can take between 2:20 and 2:40 between Penn Station and Port Jervis.

The area around Barryville is mostly wooded and heavily treed, with a number of lovely lakes. The combination of lakes, forests and rivers makes this area very popular with sportsmen and women. Thousands of acres in the area are owned by non-profits like the Boy Scouts.

Along the Delaware River on the NY side, most houses are located on the upside of Route 97 and not directly on the river. In the hamlet of Barryville, there is a pretty row of intown houses along the river.

The closest public lake for swimming is Lake Superior Park, north on Route 55. If you're planning to visit this area, Ecce Bed and Breakfast, is a great place to stay. It sits high above the Delaware River with an absolutely spectacular view of the Delaware River Valley. The Carriage House Restaurant, in Barryville, has a lively bar and good food.
